The Department of Physics at the University at Buffalo is
once again showing its support for cancer research by entering a team into the
Ride for Roswell. So… pull your
bicycles out of winter storage, pump up the tires, strap on your helmet… and
LETS GO!
Who
is eligible to ride on the team? In short…ANYONE &
EVERYONE can ride on the UB Physics team! The wonderful thing about the UB
Physics team is that we are all casual riders with various experiences. Some of
us have been riding for many years, some of us are new to biking, some of us
are physicists, and some of us are not. Anyone can do it and we strongly
encourage inviting family and friends of faculty, staff, students, and postdocs
to join the UB Physics team. So make sure you pass on the word to your loved
ones and help us support cancer research while having fun.
How
far do I have to ride? Thanks
to the fact that there are 7 different routes of various lengths to choose from
you are guaranteed to find a ride that will fit you. When you sign up just
choose whether you want to participate in the 3, 8, 20, 30, 33, 44, or 62.5
mile ride. All of the rides are local and conveniently start at Baird Point on
UB North Campus (click here
to see route maps). Over the past 2 years we have had over 20 riders
participating in almost all of the different routes. Even though many members of the UB Physics
team will be riding different routes it is okay. We will all meet up after the
ride to socialize, have a good time, and enjoy a nice BBQ.
I
can’t ride. Can I still join the team? OF COURSE!!! If you don’t feel that you
can physically join the UB Physics team, for one reason or another, you can join
our team by supporting the riders. Each rider needs $100 worth of donations to
be able to ride, and every dollar goes towards funding cancer research. Over
the past 2 years the UB Physics team has been able to raise over $4000 for the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. To
support a rider just select a participating rider’s name, click the “donate to
my ride” button on the right hand side of the page, and follow the directions.
It is extremely easy and your donations go to a great cause.
What
is our Motivation? Most of
us have some experience with cancer in one way, shape, or form. Whether we know
someone who has battled cancer, or have firsthand experience with the disease
ourselves… it is quite clear that cancer is curable thanks to institutions such
as Roswell Park and those who donate/ride for the cause. We find it
especially appropriate to form a Physics team to support a cure for cancer
since many different treatment/diagnosis techniques involve physics. e.g. using
particle accelerators for radiation therapy, MRI’s for detection, etc… it is
all applied physics. Even if we are not directly working on furthering cancer
research in our every day lives the UB Physics team allows us to make a
contribution to the cure as a rider or supporter.
Other
concerns…
I’m
broke and I can’t ride. Can I still help? YES! Find a rider of the UB Physics team
in the hallways and pat them on the back… tell them good luck.
I
don’t have a bike can I still ride? YUP! The great city
of Buffalo has a bicycle lending program. In this program you can get a bicycle
anytime, as many times as you want, for a small donation or volunteering hours.

Will
there be any practice rides? (SHAKING
HEAD UP AND DOWN). We will be scheduling practice rides which will be
announced via email and on this website in the future.
If
you have any questions, concerns, or comments feel free to email the team
